Former KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has predicted a strong political partnership between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election, with President William Ruto as the coalition’s presidential candidate.
Speaking on a local TV station on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Sossion praised ODM’s longevity and organizational strength, calling it one of Kenya’s few political parties to sustain itself over two decades.
“ODM at 20 is a big celebration. It’s not very easy in the post-multipartism era in Kenya to have a political party that has put in place structures and a democratic policy that has sustained itself for over 20 years,” Sossion said.
He highlighted the ongoing collaboration between UDA and ODM, noting that the partnership has been reinforced by President Ruto’s recognition of ODM’s role in Kenya’s political stability. Currently, the coalition includes five ODM ministers and 17 principal secretaries serving in the government.
“The president has recognised that. That is why he has engaged with ODM, and that’s why there are five ODM ministers and 17 principal secretaries. Essentially, ODM is part of the government of the Republic of Kenya,” Sossion explained.
Sossion also referenced President Ruto’s recent remarks about protecting ODM from internal divisions, reflecting the growing alliance between the ruling party and the opposition.
“When ODM invites him for an event, he attends within the framework of cooperation… ODM will form the government or be part of the next government,” he added.
Drawing parallels between the two parties, Sossion pointed out that both UDA and ODM share social democratic ideals. He noted that when Ruto left ODM to form URP, he established a party with similar values, which later evolved into UDA.
Looking ahead to 2027, Sossion confidently stated that the two parties will unite behind Ruto’s re-election bid.
“Going into 2027, UDA and ODM will be in partnership, and the presidential candidate for that coalition will be President William Ruto, who will be re-elected,” he affirmed.
