As the countdown to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) reaches its climax, Kenyan President William Ruto has thrown his weight behind Harambee Stars, delivering a strong message of support and a lucrative package of incentives to spur the team to glory. The tournament, which begins this Saturday in Tanzania, sees Kenya host some key fixtures, including the opening match against DR Congo this Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
In a morale-boosting gesture, President Ruto had breakfast with the national team and its technical bench, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye, and other senior officials. Addressing the team, the President encouraged the players to give their all and assured them that the government fully supports their continental campaign.
To underscore his commitment, President Ruto announced a series of financial incentives for the Harambee Stars squad. Each team member will earn Ksh 1 million for every match won during the tournament and Ksh 500,000 for every draw. The stakes rise as the tournament progresses: Ksh 60 million will be awarded to the team if they reach the quarterfinals, Ksh 70 million for a semifinal appearance, and an astonishing Ksh 600 million should they win the championship.
The President urged Kenyans across the country to rally behind the national team and show unwavering patriotism. “This is a golden opportunity to showcase Kenya’s footballing potential to the continent. Let us all support our boys as they carry the nation’s hopes,” he said.
Kenya has been drawn in Group A alongside strong contenders DR Congo, Zambia, Morocco, and Angola. Despite the stiff competition, the President expressed confidence in the team’s readiness and talent.
The biennial CHAN tournament, which features national teams composed exclusively of players active in domestic leagues, runs until August 30. The final will be held at the iconic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, presenting Kenya with a chance to shine both on and off the pitch as co-hosts.
With patriotic spirit, home-ground advantage, and a solid support system, Harambee Stars enter CHAN 2024 with high expectations and renewed motivation.
