President William Ruto has announced a new economic initiative that will see 70 women and youth from every ward in Kenya receive Ksh.50,000 each to start small businesses. Speaking during a church service in Nairobi, the President said the project aligns with his Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and aims to benefit 100,000 young people and women across the country.
“We have another project where in every ward we will give 70 women and youth groups Ksh.50,000 to establish businesses,” said President Ruto. He emphasized that this initiative is designed to uplift those at the bottom of the economic pyramid, staying true to his campaign promise of inclusive development.
The President used the platform to dismiss criticism of his frequent cash pledges and financial programs, stating that detractors are largely those who already enjoy privilege and influence. “Those shouting at me are at the top; they should give me an opportunity to lift those who are at the bottom,” he said defiantly.
Ruto also criticized past governments for failing to implement key promises such as Universal Health Coverage and affordable housing, asserting that his administration will deliver where others have failed. “I am committed, I am determined, I am focused on transforming Kenya,” he stated, vowing to fulfill his mandate despite public criticism and political opposition.
In addition to the empowerment fund, Ruto pledged a new sewage infrastructure for Nairobi as part of the Ksh.40 billion Nairobi River clean-up project. The ambitious initiative, which aims to restore the capital’s environment and improve public health, is expected to be completed by January 2027.
The President’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the government’s spending priorities, especially as the country grapples with economic challenges and public unrest over the cost of living. Still, Ruto maintains that his bottom-up agenda will create long-term solutions by enabling citizens to generate their own income and build sustainable livelihoods.
“This is my God-given assignment,” he said. “And I will see it through.”
