The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Susan Mang’eni, has endorsed the Absa Business Credit Card, a new financial product developed by Absa Bank Kenya, as a critical tool in empowering Kenya’s MSME sector.
Launched in collaboration with Visa, the Absa Business Credit Card is designed to address longstanding financial challenges faced by MSMEs. The card offers access to working capital, flexible repayment options, real-time expense tracking, enhanced security features, and global acceptance—factors expected to significantly ease cash flow constraints and promote business growth.
Mang’eni, speaking at the launch event, emphasized the crucial role MSMEs play in the Kenyan economy. “The MSME sector contributes over 40% of our GDP and employs a substantial portion of the population, particularly women and young people,” she noted. “This business credit card supports the bold reforms being undertaken by the government to create a more supportive environment for MSMEs.”
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to co-create impactful programs, support evidence-based research, and engage the private sector in policy dialogues aimed at unlocking the full potential of small businesses across the country.
Visa Kenya Country Manager, John Njoroge, echoed Mang’eni’s sentiments, highlighting the need for continued innovation and strategic partnerships. “SMEs face daily challenges ranging from access to finance to keeping up with digital trends,” said Njoroge. “But with the right mindset and collaboration, these hurdles can become opportunities.”
Absa Bank Kenya’s Director of Business Banking, Elizabeth Wasunna, stressed the bank’s ongoing commitment to MSME empowerment. “Our focus extends beyond financing—we aim to be long-term partners in business growth by providing tailored financial solutions, capacity building, and market access through strategic partnerships,” she said.
With the introduction of the Absa Business Credit Card, Kenya’s MSMEs gain a new financial instrument that supports sustainability and expansion, aligning with national development goals and inclusive economic growth.
