Quickmart Supermarket has issued a public apology following a widely circulated video that captured two customers recounting their distressing experience at the retailer’s Buruburu branch. The incident, which has since sparked online outrage, has prompted the company to take swift disciplinary and corrective action.
In the viral video, one of the customers explains how she and her brother visited the store to buy milk from the Quickmart ATM. After paying for one litre and receiving a receipt, they collected the exact amount of milk. However, as they were exiting, they were stopped and asked to present the receipt. The staff member reportedly cancelled it and accused them of theft.
The situation quickly escalated when they were taken to the receiving bay, where more staff joined in. The customer claims she began recording the encounter for her safety but was physically assaulted by a staff member who demanded she stop filming. Her brother was also allegedly beaten when he tried to intervene. The staff member later accused them of stealing 57 litres of milk, a claim their father who arrived shortly after strongly denied before filing a police report.
In response to the backlash, Quickmart released a statement on Tuesday, expressing regret and apologising to the affected customers and the public. “Our foremost priority is the well-being and dignity of every customer who walks through our doors. We deeply regret the distress this incident has caused,” the statement read.
Quickmart confirmed it had suspended the staff members involved and launched a full investigation in coordination with the relevant authorities. The supermarket chain emphasised its commitment to respect, professionalism, and customer dignity, stating that the incident does not reflect its values.
Additionally, Quickmart has reached out directly to the affected family, offering support and reassurance. The company reiterated its dedication to maintaining safe and inclusive spaces for all, adding that staff regularly undergo training to uphold high service standards.
“We are committed to learning from this incident and ensuring that our stores remain safe, welcoming spaces for everyone,” the statement concluded.
