President William Ruto has announced a major boost to Kisumu’s affordable housing efforts following the donation of five acres of land by ODM party leader Raila Odinga. The land, located in the Kirembe area, will be used by the national government to construct more housing units under its affordable housing program.
Speaking during a tour of Kisumu on Thursday, President Ruto praised Odinga’s gesture, calling it a testament to national unity and the shared goal of improving the lives of Kenyans. The Head of State revealed that the government would invest Ksh.3.5 billion into the project, which is expected to benefit nearly 1,000 local residents.
“The donation by Raila Odinga is a powerful demonstration of patriotism and partnership. Through this land, we will bring homes, dignity, and opportunity to the people of Kisumu,” said Ruto during the groundbreaking ceremony at Kirembe grounds.
The President also highlighted ongoing construction at the Lumumba affordable housing site, which is projected to accommodate 2,000 residents. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to decent and affordable housing, as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Odinga, who was present at the event, emphasized the need for collaboration across political lines to address Kenya’s pressing challenges. He said the five-acre land donation was his contribution toward easing housing demand in Kisumu and pledged continued support for development initiatives.
“I will continue working with the government for the benefit of the people. This housing project will not only offer homes but will also include vital amenities like schools and hospitals,” said Odinga.
Ruto urged Kenyans to dismiss divisive politics and focus on building a united nation. He said the Kisumu project was just one of many housing developments in the pipeline, with a national target to deliver thousands of units across the country.
The event marked a significant moment of political unity and shared development vision between two of Kenya’s most prominent leaders, promising a brighter future for Kisumu residents.
