President William Ruto has departed Kenya for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He will attend the second Africa Climate Summit, a high-level meeting of African leaders focused on climate action and green growth.
Launch of Key Climate Report
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed said Ruto will launch a report titled “From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership.”
The report reviews progress since the first summit in Nairobi. It also highlights challenges and sets out Africa’s future climate ambitions.
Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative
While in Addis, Ruto will witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII).
This initiative brings together governments, financiers, the AfCFTA Secretariat, and private sector partners. It will mobilise funding, technical support, and investment for renewable energy and green infrastructure.
A Joint Project Preparation Facility, supported by financial institutions, will also fast-track bankable green projects across the continent.
Ruto’s Role in Climate Leadership
As chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Ruto will push for:
- Fair resource valuation.
- Equitable carbon pricing.
- Financial reforms to reduce Africa’s debt burden.
He will also join talks on climate finance to secure new investment and strengthen Africa’s influence in global reforms.
Other Key Engagements
Beyond the summit, Ruto will address the Africa-CARICOM Summit. Discussions will focus on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and stronger transcontinental cooperation.
He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings aimed at boosting trade ties and advancing regional partnerships.
Inauguration of the GERD
Ruto will be the chief guest at the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
For Kenya, the Ethiopia-Kenya power interconnector already provides clean, affordable energy. It strengthens electricity supply during droughts and supports industrial growth.
Together with the Kenya-Tanzania interconnector, this project is helping East Africa share renewable energy, improve grid stability, and accelerate regional integration.
