Over the past 25 years, Safaricom has grown from a small telco into a major player in mobile communications, mobile money services, and digital solutions, revolutionizing the way Kenyans live, work, and communicate.
The milestone comes amid strong financial performance. Safaricom’s net earnings for the first six months of the year rose by 52.1% to Sh42.8 billion, supported by reduced losses in Ethiopia. The company recorded service revenue of Sh200 billion, with the Kenyan subsidiary contributing Sh194 billion, marking a 9.3% growth. Revenue from Ethiopia surged 136% to Sh6.2 billion.
In Kenya, net profit grew 22.6% to Sh52.8 billion, while Ethiopia reported Sh15.5 billion, up 20.1%. For the first time, mobile data revenue of Sh44.5 billion (+18.2% YoY) surpassed voice revenue, reflecting the growing demand for digital services. EBITDA rose 34.9% to Sh101.3 billion, driven by a shift toward higher-yield offerings.
Safaricom’s M-Pesa ecosystem also showed strong growth. The total value of Fuliza rose 40% to Sh629.2 billion, while M-Pesa’s credit portfolio grew 15%, with overall revenue and total value increasing by 14.2% and 30.9% respectively.
Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom Group CEO, said, “This is a strong set of results and a solid start to our Vision 2030 strategy cycle. We remain focused on executing our strategy through segment-led execution and integrated solutions.”
As Safaricom marks this quarter-century milestone, customers can celebrate by connecting with loved ones using the free 10-minute call offer, symbolizing the telco’s ongoing mission to keep Kenya connected and digitally empowered.
