In a landmark announcement at the Connected Africa Summit 2025 in Diani, Kwale County, Safaricom has revealed plans to invest over Sh65 billion ($500 million) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure across East Africa over the next three years. The strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to building an intelligent, connected, and digitally inclusive future for the region.
Safaricom’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Cynthia Kropac, said the investment is aimed at enhancing connectivity while laying the groundwork for a robust and scalable AI ecosystem. “Africa has an opportunity to define its own AI destiny,” Kropac noted, emphasizing that the continent must evolve from being a passive consumer of AI to an active innovator and contributor in the space.
Kropac outlined the initiative under the theme “Building the Rails for AI: Laying the Foundations for Africa’s Intelligent Economy”. She highlighted that the investment will transcend traditional connectivity by powering advanced digital services, boosting innovation across all economic sectors, and significantly increasing regional productivity.
In preparation for this transformation, Safaricom has already trained 5,000 employees in AI fundamentals, ensuring a strong knowledge base to drive this ambitious agenda. “We believe the time is ripe for the region to build its own AI frameworks,” she said. “Our aim is to deliver seamless, intelligent, and inclusive digital experiences for all Africans.”
The company’s AI drive is also expected to benefit small and large businesses across East Africa by providing access to cutting-edge technology and tools that can improve operational efficiency, customer engagement, and competitiveness.
Beyond infrastructure, Safaricom’s bold move reinforces its role as a digital enabler. “By fostering innovation and enabling access to digital solutions, we continue to play a central role in unlocking socio-economic growth and empowering communities across the continent,” Kropac affirmed.
The Connected Africa Summit 2025, which brings together digital leaders and policymakers, is focused on propelling the continent toward a more interconnected and innovation-driven future. Safaricom’s AI initiative is poised to be a cornerstone of that transformation.
