Siaya County Commissioner Mobert Komora has issued show-cause letters to government officers who failed to attend this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations held on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga grounds.
Komora expressed disappointment over the low turnout, revealing that less than 200 county staff attended the annual national event. He warned that civil servants who deliberately skipped the ceremony would face disciplinary action.
“Days of national celebrations are supposed to be observed by all civil servants. It is not their day to stay at home and watch television. They are supposed to be here,” Komora stated.
The County Commissioner instructed his deputy to conduct a roll call of all government officers who attended the function and ordered those absent to submit written explanations. He emphasized that failure to comply would lead to the issuance of show-cause letters and further disciplinary measures.
Komora further challenged any public servants unwilling to fulfill their duties, particularly during national events, to consider resigning.
“If they do not wish to work for the government, they can kindly tender their resignation letters. We will find other people who can work for the government,” he added.
The low turnout was not unique to Siaya. Similar reports came from Mombasa County, where County Commissioner Mohammed Nur attributed the sparse attendance to the Sunday burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.
This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations were dedicated to Odinga, who passed away at 80 and was buried on October 19. Speaking during the national event in Kitui County, President William Ruto posthumously honoured Odinga with the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart, Kenya’s highest national award, in recognition of his immense contribution to the nation’s democratic transformation.
