Fred Osiro, a 35-year-old sugarcane seller in Kericho, has turned his simple roadside hustle into a thriving business. Situated near the Kiprugut Chumo Stadium, Osiro’s wheelbarrow, filled with freshly harvested sugarcane, attracts a steady flow of customers drawn by his cleanliness, friendly demeanor, and the irresistible scent of freshly cut sugarcane.
Osiro began his business five years ago with just Sh200, purchasing a few sugarcanes and hoping for the best. Now, his venture earns him at least Sh1500 daily, making it a key source of income for his family. His business primarily serves school children, boda boda riders, matatu drivers, and market vendors, who appreciate his commitment to quality and hygiene.
“I started this business with nothing, but today, it supports my wife and children. It has been a life-changing journey,” Osiro shared with Kenya News Agency. He sources his sugarcane from Kipkelion, ensuring a steady supply for the week. Currently, he stores his sugarcane at home to save on costs, but plans to expand his operations in the future by renting a stall.
Despite the challenges of working under the sun or in heavy rain, Osiro remains resilient. He believes that customer care is key to his success. “It’s not just about selling; it’s about building relationships. Listening to people, joking with them it’s what keeps them coming back,” Osiro said.
His business is booming, especially on weekends and market days, when he sells double the amount of sugarcane. Osiro now plans to diversify by opening a juice stall, where he can add value to his sugarcane products and offer customers a refreshing experience.
Osiro’s story is not just one of financial success, but a testament to perseverance and determination. After dropping out of school at Standard 8 due to financial constraints, he worked various odd jobs before discovering his passion for business. Today, he encourages unemployed youth to pursue honest work and avoid crime or gambling, showing that with hard work, anyone can achieve success.
