Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime has announced a 100% waiver on penalties and interest for unpaid land rates. The move targets landowners and landlords with outstanding balances.
In a gazette notice dated September 6, issued through County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Elijah Mwanzo, the governor stated that the waiver is valid for 39 days from the date of publication.
How the Waiver Works
The waiver covers all interest accrued on unpaid land rates, as long as the principal amount is fully paid by October 15, 2025.
Additionally, Governor Mwadime announced a 40% waiver on the principal amount. Landowners who pay the remaining 60% of the principal by the same deadline will qualify.
“The waivers are meant to encourage compliance among defaulting ratepayers,” said Governor Mwadime. He added that the move will help the county recover outstanding revenue and ensure a smooth transition to the new valuation roll.
Other Counties Offering Waivers
Governor Mwadime joins other Kenyan leaders offering similar incentives.
- Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o offered a 100% waiver on penalties and interest in June, valid for 18 days.
- Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga waived all penalties and interest on land rates in May to support economic recovery.
Key Reminder for Landowners
County officials have urged landowners to take advantage of this waiver. The benefits only apply if the principal is fully paid within the deadline.
This initiative is expected to boost compliance, help recover county revenue, and provide relief to landowners struggling with accumulated penalties and interest.
