The Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) has revoked the licences of four tour operators for breaking industry rules, including hiring unlicensed drivers.
TRA Director-General Norbert Tallam said the operators cannot operate in Kenya until they meet all regulatory requirements. “We are here to ensure that Kenya’s tourism sector is properly regulated. Rogue operators and unlicensed drivers must come forward and regularise their businesses or they will not be allowed to operate,” he said.
The licence revocations followed violations such as using unlicensed drivers and defrauding tourists during bookings. TRA also warned tourists, both local and international, not to use unlicensed operators. Non-compliant businesses could face similar action.
Crackdown Expands Across Key Destinations
The crackdown began in the Maasai Mara and has spread to other tourist areas, including the coast, Tsavo, and Amboseli. Several firms have since complied with the rules, proving the campaign is working. TRA clarified that the effort is meant to clean up the sector, not to stifle business.
Becoming a Licensed Tour Operator in Kenya
To get a licence, tour companies must provide:
- Certificate of incorporation or registration
- Valid KRA PIN
- Professional certifications
- Vehicle logbooks and insurance
- Proof of vehicle and premises ownership or lease
Individual tour guides need:
- Valid ID
- Certificate of good conduct
- KRA PIN
- Accredited tour guiding training
Guides must also take regular refresher courses to stay updated on wildlife conservation, customer care, and safety.
TRA’s crackdown aims to make Kenya’s tourism industry safer, more professional, and sustainable. Tourists are encouraged to work only with licensed operators to enjoy a safe and authentic experience.
