Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, has strongly condemned recent acts of vandalism targeting critical electricity infrastructure in the Ugunja area of Siaya County. Describing the incidents as deliberate sabotage rather than petty theft, Wandayi expressed deep concern over the destruction of vital resources that are crucial for the region’s development.
Speaking at a funeral in Siaya County, Wandayi highlighted the shocking actions of criminals who have been siphoning oil from transformers, cutting electricity wires, and even felling electric poles. These acts, he stated, not only harm the infrastructure but also undermine efforts to improve the quality of life in the region by ensuring reliable electricity access.
“This is more than theft; this is outright sabotage,” Wandayi said, emphasizing the severity of the situation. He noted that while the government is working hard to bring essential services, such as electricity, to rural areas, a few individuals are actively undermining these efforts by causing destruction to the infrastructure that is meant to benefit the entire community.
Wandayi called on national government officials, including administrative officers, the police, and local authorities, to take swift action in apprehending those responsible. He urged law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted and dealt with according to the law. “Let those responsible be taken to court and dealt with according to the law,” he said, stressing that this destructive behavior must be stopped.
The Cabinet Secretary further appealed for unity among residents and government officials to find lasting solutions to the problem. He expressed confidence that through collaborative efforts, the issue of vandalism could be addressed, ensuring the protection of the region’s development progress. He also reminded the public to safeguard these developments as their own, stressing the importance of communal responsibility.
In his speech, Wandayi also reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing electricity access in the region and called for peace and unity in the face of challenges. He urged the community to come together in love and solidarity, especially following the tragic loss of nine family members in a house fire in Sigomre.
