The MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit has launched a bursary programme aimed at expanding genomics and bioinformatics research across Africa. The programme, supported by Roche’s African Genomics Program, is designed to strengthen the continent’s research capacity and bridge the data gap in genomics.
A central part of this initiative is the Uganda Medical Informatics Centre (UMIC), a state-of-the-art high-performance computing hub located in Entebbe. UMIC provides cutting-edge resources for bioinformatics and genomics research, allowing African researchers to make data-driven discoveries in molecular biology and related fields.
The bursary programme targets up to 50 MSc and PhD students, along with early-career researchers in genomics, computational biology, and similar disciplines. The selected candidates will receive a £2,000 grant, access to UMIC’s advanced computational resources, and mentorship from leading genomics experts across Africa and globally.
This opportunity is designed to foster collaboration among African researchers while also promoting inclusivity, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented groups in science. By providing the necessary financial and technical support, the programme ensures that African scientists can actively contribute to global genomics research, particularly in the areas of infectious and non-communicable diseases, which are prevalent on the continent.
The initiative is aligned with Roche’s long-term commitment to strengthening African scientific leadership and promoting sustainable development in genomics and bioinformatics. According to Professor Moffat Nyirenda of the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, the partnership with Roche will further enhance the Unit’s role as a leader in African-led scientific innovation.
The bursary also addresses the global genomics gap by empowering young African scientists to engage in cutting-edge research using the most advanced computational tools available. By increasing African representation in global genomic datasets, this initiative contributes to more accurate and diverse health research, particularly in the areas of precision medicine.
Applications are open until 31 October 2025. Interested candidates can find more information and submit their applications through the official MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit portal.
