Hundreds of Busia residents have received free and comprehensive healthcare services following a week-long medical camp organized through a strategic partnership between the County Government of Busia and the M-Pesa Foundation.
The initiative, launched to bridge healthcare access gaps in the region, provided a wide range of medical services including general doctor consultations, women’s health services, cancer screening, eye care consultations, dental screening, disability assessment and therapy, immunization, and other essential medical interventions. The outreach focused on early detection and preventive care, especially targeting vulnerable groups.
Speaking during the official opening of the camp, Deputy Governor Arthur Odera, who also serves as the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Health and Sanitation, underscored the importance of regular health check-ups. He particularly emphasized the need for individuals over the age of 40 to prioritize screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension, and various forms of cancer, which often go unnoticed until they reach critical stages.
“Early diagnosis can save lives,” Odera stated. “We urge residents to make routine health screenings a part of their lifestyle. It is through such early interventions that we can prevent complications and ensure better health outcomes.”
He also highlighted the importance of cervical cancer prevention and encouraged parents to ensure their daughters receive the HPV vaccine, which offers crucial protection. “The county is committed to creating awareness around HPV vaccination. Protecting our girls today guarantees a healthier future for our communities,” he added.
In a further boost to women’s health, the Deputy Governor announced a specialized Fistula medical camp set to begin on July 18th, 2025. The camp will offer treatment to women living with obstetric fistula — a condition that not only causes physical discomfort but also leads to social stigma and emotional distress. “This upcoming camp will help restore the dignity and sense of motherhood to affected women,” he said.
The medical camp reflects a growing commitment from both the county and partners like the M-Pesa Foundation to ensure equitable healthcare access across Busia County. Residents expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that such outreach programs are essential for underserved communities.
