Health leaders from across the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region have convened in Lusaka, Zambia, for the official opening of the Second Meeting of COMESA Ministers of Health. The high-level gathering, running over two days, brings together ministers, senior health officials, and development partners to set the direction for regional health priorities.
The meeting serves as a platform to deepen collaboration in strengthening health systems, fostering local pharmaceutical and medical supply manufacturing, and enhancing readiness for future pandemics. Delegates are expected to build on progress made during the inaugural session held in May 2024, translating earlier commitments into actionable strategies.

A key focus is developing harmonised policies that support cross-border cooperation in disease surveillance, emergency response, and the distribution of essential medical resources. Participants will explore ways to integrate innovative digital health solutions, bolster human resource capacity in the sector, and encourage knowledge sharing between member states.
Local manufacturing remains a priority, with discussions aimed at reducing the region’s dependency on imported medical products. By promoting investment in local production facilities and creating a conducive policy environment, COMESA seeks to ensure a sustainable supply of quality, affordable medicines and medical equipment. This aligns with the broader continental vision for health self-reliance and resilience in the face of global supply chain disruptions.

Pandemic preparedness is another major theme, with delegates reviewing lessons learned from recent public health emergencies. Plans include enhancing laboratory networks, improving regional stockpiles of essential supplies, and streamlining coordination mechanisms for rapid response during outbreaks. These measures are intended to strengthen the region’s collective ability to manage both current and emerging health threats effectively.
The gathering also provides a platform for forging stronger partnerships with international health agencies, private sector players, and civil society organisations. By aligning resources and expertise, COMESA member states aim to accelerate progress towards universal health coverage and improved health outcomes for their populations.
The Second COMESA Ministers of Health Meeting underscores the importance of solidarity, innovation, and shared responsibility in safeguarding public health across the region. Outcomes from the discussions are expected to shape the region’s health agenda in the years ahead, fostering a united approach to tackling both immediate and long-term health challenges.
