Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access in Kenya by leading a high-level delegation on a site visit to the upcoming Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) 2,000-bed multi-speciality facility in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County.
The ultra-modern facility, to be constructed on a 200-acre parcel of land, will be one of the largest referral hospitals in the region. Once completed, it will complement Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda by providing affordable and specialised healthcare services to communities not only in Uasin Gishu but also across the country and neighbouring regions.
The Ministry of Health team also visited Ziwa Sirikwa Sub-County Hospital to review progress on its long-stalled upgrade. The KSh 800 million project, which has been under construction for nearly a decade, is now set for completion. The upgrade will elevate the hospital to a Level 5 facility, significantly enhancing specialised service delivery for surrounding communities.
Speaking during the tour, Duale assured residents that the government remains committed to ensuring timely completion of both projects. He emphasised that the MTRH expansion will be supported by the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), ensuring the facility is well-equipped to meet international healthcare standards.
The delegation included senior ministry officials, Uasin Gishu County leadership, and technical experts. Governor Jonathan Bii, together with the MTRH management team, welcomed the visit as a clear demonstration of government support for healthcare development in the county.
The 2,000-bed facility is expected to not only ease congestion at existing referral hospitals but also drive medical research, training, and innovation in line with Kenya’s long-term health sector strategy. The project marks a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare systems at both county and national levels.
