Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale chaired a high-level meeting on June 26, 2025, at Afya House to fast-track the rollout of the National Equipment Service Program (NESP) across counties. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Council of Governors and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), in a strategic effort to accelerate implementation and improve healthcare delivery at the county level.
The agenda focused on a detailed review of the NESP rollout framework, which is designed to equip public health facilities with modern medical equipment and strengthen service delivery. Discussions emphasized the importance of aligning the program with the unique needs of each county, ensuring that equipment placement is strategic, needs-based, and tailored to the health infrastructure in each region.
Participants highlighted the necessity of a structured county sensitization approach to improve preparedness and local ownership of the program. Sensitization efforts are expected to foster cooperation between national and county governments, reduce implementation bottlenecks, and enhance sustainability by ensuring that county health officials are fully engaged in the rollout process.
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the government’s commitment to the success of NESP, describing it as a cornerstone in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He noted that by enhancing the capacity of public health facilities through timely and targeted equipment provision, the program will improve access to quality and affordable healthcare services for all Kenyans.
The meeting also acknowledged the collaborative role of various government departments and agencies in the successful implementation of NESP. Senior officials present included the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, the Health Advisor in the Executive Office of the President, and the PIU leadership. Their presence reinforced the importance of multi-sectoral coordination in driving forward health sector reforms.
The stakeholders agreed to streamline the program’s operational arrangements and adopt a monitoring framework to track progress in real time. Emphasis was placed on accountability, efficiency, and inclusivity, ensuring that no county is left behind as the program scales up nationwide.
As the rollout progresses, the government plans to continue engaging county leadership and healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of high-impact medical services. With a renewed focus on partnership, infrastructure readiness, and sustained political will, NESP is poised to transform the health sector and bring Kenya closer to its goal of Universal Health Coverage.
