Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga praised faith-based health institutions as vital pillars of compassionate care in Kenya’s healthcare system.
Speaking at the iconic facility where he began his medical career, Dr. Oluga emphasized the importance of dedication, discipline, and purpose for young professionals pursuing careers in healthcare. “If you love your work, apply discipline, and commit to excellence, there is no limit to where you can serve,” he encouraged.
The visit was deeply personal for the PS, who took time to interact with intern doctors, posing for a group photo in a show of support and mentorship. “Kijabe Hospital holds a special place in my heart. It shaped the beginning of my journey in medicine,” he said, reflecting on his early days at the institution.
Dr. Oluga’s visit comes at a pivotal moment, as the Ministry of Health intensifies its collaboration with faith-based organisations to expand access to quality healthcare. The government’s recent engagements, including a meeting with the African Inland Church (AIC) leadership at State House, underscore this renewed partnership. During that meeting, the AIC Archbishop confirmed the operationalisation of the Social Health Authority (SHA), a key institution under the new health financing model.
Dr. Oluga reiterated the Ministry’s support for the SHA and its role in ensuring the sustainability of mission hospitals like Kijabe. These facilities, he noted, are instrumental in delivering specialized services such as oncology and orthopaedics, especially in underserved regions.
Kijabe Hospital, known for its high standards of clinical care and ethical service delivery, has long served as a training ground and beacon of hope for patients and professionals alike. The PS’s visit not only celebrated its legacy but also reinforced the government’s commitment to harnessing the strengths of faith-based healthcare providers in building a resilient and inclusive health system.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, faith-based institutions continue to provide a unique blend of spiritual and medical care anchoring communities and nurturing the next generation of health professionals.
