Residents of Migadini in Changamwe, Mombasa County, are living in fear after four people died under mysterious circumstances. The alarming nature of the deaths with victims reportedly found swollen and with peeling skin has stirred anxiety and speculation across the local community.
While residents have expressed deep concern over the condition of the bodies, the Mombasa County Department of Health has ruled out the presence of an infectious disease. In a statement issued on Tuesday, health officials noted that the deceased had pre-existing underlying conditions, though further investigations are underway.
“The Department of Health, Mombasa County government, has received unverified reports of deaths of four individuals under unclear circumstances. Upon receiving this information, the Department immediately deployed an investigative team to Migadini area to investigate the reported cases and the public concerns,” the department said.
To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation, medical samples have been sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for testing. Post-mortem examinations will also be conducted at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where the bodies are currently preserved.
Despite health authorities urging calm, locals remain on edge. “We are terrified because we don’t know what’s going on. People are afraid to even go to work or let their children play outside,” one resident told reporters.
The Department of Health has advised the public to maintain high hygiene standards and to report any cases of missing persons or unusual symptoms through community health promoters and local leaders.
“Although the health department has not found any evidence of an infectious disease at this stage, we urge the public to liaise with community health promoters, community leaders and community-based organisations,” the statement added.
Officials assured residents that the situation is being closely monitored and promised timely updates as more information becomes available.
As the community awaits answers, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strong public health surveillance and swift communication between residents and authorities.
