The Ministry of Health (MOH) has launched a new fully equipped maternity theatre at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital in Kajiado County, marking a major step toward enhancing maternal healthcare in the region.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Friday, October 24, 2025, the Ministry revealed that the facility was established through the National Equipment Support Programme (NESP), which continues to transform healthcare facilities across Kenya.
“The establishment of the National Equipment Support Programme (NESP) has continued to transform health facilities across the country, with Kitengela Sub-County Hospital in Kajiado now among its latest beneficiaries,” the Ministry stated.
The newly launched operating theatre is designed to provide expectant mothers with safer, faster, and more dignified delivery services, addressing the long-standing need for improved maternal care in Kajiado.
The facility was officially commissioned by County Executive Committee Member for Health, Alex Kilowua, and represents a joint investment between the national and county governments to modernize health infrastructure and strengthen emergency response capacity.
According to the Ministry, the launch underscores the government’s continued commitment to ensuring equitable, quality, and accessible healthcare for all Kenyans, especially in underserved regions.
“The new facility marks a significant step towards improving maternal and surgical care in Kajiado County,” the statement added.
This development follows President William Ruto’s remarks made on September 30, 2025, at UMMA University in Kajiado County, where he defended the Linda Mama programme, initiated during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Ruto praised the programme as a well-intentioned initiative that laid the foundation for Kenya’s ongoing universal health coverage reforms.
“We should be a bit magnanimous to him. The Linda Mama programme was a great program. We developed it under his leadership and learned a lot from it,” Ruto said.
The new maternity unit now stands as a symbol of Kenya’s advancing healthcare transformation and commitment to maternal well-being.
