Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing maternal health as a key national agenda, emphasizing a life-course approach that supports women’s wellbeing before, during, and after pregnancy. Speaking during the launch of the Rumuruti Mission Hospital in Laikipia County, the CS underscored the importance of comprehensive healthcare strategies that cater to women throughout all stages of life.
Duale noted that the Ministry of Health is working on a framework that will involve women leaders in shaping policies and recommendations focused on preventive and promotive healthcare. He emphasized that maternal health should not be seen as an isolated event but as part of a continuous journey of wellness for women from adolescence to motherhood and beyond.
The launch of the Rumuruti Mission Hospital marked the end of a week-long medical outreach organized by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), which provided services to more than 2,000 residents. The hospital, constructed by the PCEA Health Board, becomes the fourth mission hospital under the church in the Rift Valley region, joining Kikuyu, Tumutumu, and Chogoria hospitals. The facility is expected to expand access to affordable and quality healthcare for rural communities in Laikipia and surrounding areas.
The CS commended faith-based organizations for their vital role in Kenya’s health sector, noting that they operate nearly 30 percent of the country’s health facilities. He praised their collaboration in advancing the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda and contributing to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) through the Taifa Care Model.
Highlighting the Social Health Authority (SHA) benefits, Duale said the program will cover maternal healthcare, dialysis, emergency services, and chronic illnesses, ensuring equitable access for all Kenyans. He stressed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability within the SHA and warned against fraudulent practices targeting the health fund.
Duale reiterated President William Ruto’s directive that the government will cover SHA contributions for 1.5 million indigent citizens across all 47 counties, while governors and MPs will support an additional one million beneficiaries. He urged Kenyans to unite behind the national development agenda and avoid divisive politics. The Ministry will further support the new hospital with a borehole and essential medical supplies to strengthen healthcare delivery in the region.
