Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has urged Kenyans to be vigilant and actively report any suspicious or fraudulent activities involving the Social Health Authority (SHA). Speaking during a community engagement forum held at Voi Stadium in Taita Taveta County, Duale emphasized the need for citizen involvement in protecting the integrity of Kenya’s healthcare system.
The CS introduced a toll-free reporting mechanism, *147#, which allows the public to confidentially report any suspected abuse, malpractice, or misuse of SHA resources. According to Duale, public participation is essential to ensuring the effective implementation and success of ongoing health reforms.
“We are urging every Kenyan to take part in safeguarding the Social Health Authority by reporting any signs of abuse or misconduct. Dial *147#; it’s toll-free and confidential,” he said. This initiative aims to create accountability and transparency within the SHA framework, which plays a vital role in advancing Kenya’s universal healthcare agenda.
Duale reiterated that the SHA is central to the government’s broader healthcare reform strategy. It is designed to streamline the delivery of essential health services, increase access to care, and manage resources efficiently. Any breach in its operations, he warned, could severely compromise public trust and the ability of the authority to deliver on its mandate.
Beyond the SHA campaign, the CS also took the opportunity to recognize the work of over 1,300 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in Taita Taveta County. These frontline health workers have played a critical role in delivering primary healthcare services at the household level, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
Duale assured residents that the government is keen on supporting CHPs and scaling up community health interventions. He also used the forum to educate the public about the various packages and benefits available under the SHA system, encouraging eligible Kenyans to register and take full advantage of the healthcare services provided.
The call to action comes amid broader efforts to reform Kenya’s healthcare sector and promote Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Recent reports have highlighted ongoing challenges, including cases of fraud, staffing issues, and facility closures. Duale’s engagement in Taita Taveta is part of a series of public outreach efforts by the Ministry of Health to boost awareness, address local concerns, and strengthen community involvement.
With the SHA playing a pivotal role in delivering quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare, the government’s commitment to integrity, accountability, and public trust remains a top priority. Citizens are now being called upon to be part of the solution by reporting any irregularities that could hinder the system’s success.
