Nyandarua County has made remarkable strides in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), reporting 96% vaccination coverage and 98% of maternity services being delivered by skilled health personnel. These milestones highlight the county’s growing commitment to improving access, quality, and equity in healthcare delivery.
A key part of this progress is the planned expansion of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) from the current 1,237 to about 1,500. This scale-up is expected to strengthen household-level health services, ensuring that families have easier access to preventive and primary care. By extending the reach of CHPs, the county aims to promote healthier lifestyles, early detection of illnesses, and timely referrals to health facilities.
Residents have also been encouraged to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), which plays a central role in making healthcare more affordable and protecting households from catastrophic medical expenses. Expanding SHA registration is a critical step toward achieving full national coverage, which ensures that no Kenyan is left behind in accessing essential services.
A major milestone for Nyandarua’s health system is the new ultra-modern wing at JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital. Once operational, this state-of-the-art facility will host an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), newborn care, and postnatal units. These additions will elevate the hospital into a Level 5 teaching and referral centre, boosting its capacity to serve as a regional hub for specialized care.
Through the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital has also benefited from advanced medical equipment. A CT scan unit is set to be installed, while ultrasound and dialysis machines are on the way. Healthcare professionals are undergoing training to effectively operate this technology, ensuring patients benefit from modern diagnostic and treatment options.
These developments reflect the growing recognition of health as both a human development foundation and a key driver of economic growth. By reducing disease burdens, improving maternal and child health, and expanding access to advanced medical services, Nyandarua is positioning itself as a model county in Kenya’s journey toward achieving UHC.
The county’s experience demonstrates that a strong health system built on preventive care, community health, and modern facilities—can significantly improve wellbeing while contributing to national development.
