The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has announced a temporary closure of its distribution centres from Monday, July 1 to Friday, July 4, 2025, to facilitate its annual stock-taking exercise. Operations are scheduled to resume on Monday, July 7, following the weekend.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, KEMSA stated that all dispatch and receipt of medical supplies will be suspended during the four-day period. However, emergency cases will still be attended to.
“This annual exercise is crucial for transparency and accountability in the management of medical supplies,” the notice read. KEMSA has advised all customers and stakeholders to make the necessary logistical arrangements in advance to avoid disruption in service delivery.
KEMSA, a state corporation under the Ministry of Health, is tasked with procuring, warehousing, and distributing Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) to support public health programs across Kenya. The annual stock-take ensures that all inventory records are accurate, helping prevent stockouts or overstocking—both critical to ensuring uninterrupted medical supply to healthcare facilities in all 47 counties.
As part of its modernization efforts, KEMSA recently rolled out advanced digital systems aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. In February 2025, the authority introduced a Logistics Management Information System (LMIS), which provides real-time tracking of medical supplies. This digitization drive is expected to significantly improve visibility across the supply chain and minimize discrepancies.
KEMSA CEO Waqo Ejersa emphasized that the adoption of such technologies is a strategic move toward strengthening transparency and reliability within the supply system. “We are committed to operational excellence and accountability,” said Ejersa. His sentiments were echoed by KEMSA Board Chairperson Samuel Tanui, who highlighted the authority’s capacity to meet the country’s medical supply needs effectively.

The proactive stock-taking initiative is a testament to KEMSA’s continued efforts to deliver timely, efficient, and transparent services in Kenya’s healthcare sector.
