Kenya is intensifying its efforts to address the intersection of climate change and health, with recent initiatives reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable solutions in the health sector. Key achievements include the Kenya Climate Change and Health Strategy (2024–2029), the Household Air Pollution Prevention Strategy, and the introduction of non-burn clinical waste management technologies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Building on these milestones, the Ministry of Health has opened new avenues for collaboration with global partners to accelerate climate–health action. High-level discussions with the Rockefeller Foundation explored opportunities to strengthen Kenya’s capacity in research, innovation, and workforce training while positioning the country as a continental leader in climate-health policy implementation.
A major focus of the dialogue was preparing Kenya’s health sector to showcase its innovative partnership-driven approach at upcoming global and regional platforms. These include the 30th Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP30) in Brazil and the Pan-African Environment, Climate Change and Health Conference to be held in Nairobi. Kenya intends to demonstrate how integrated strategies can help safeguard health systems against climate-related risks such as extreme weather events, vector-borne diseases, and air pollution.
The conversation also emphasized investment in building a skilled workforce equipped to respond to climate-related health challenges. This involves capacity development and training for health professionals, enabling them to design and implement interventions that promote resilience within communities most affected by climate change.
Kenya’s climate–health agenda highlights a holistic model that not only addresses environmental sustainability but also prioritizes public health outcomes. By scaling up partnerships with institutions such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the country seeks to mobilize both financial and technical resources to achieve long-term goals.
These initiatives reflect a forward-looking strategy that aligns with Kenya’s broader vision for climate adaptation and health system strengthening. Through innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, Kenya is working to ensure that its health sector remains resilient and responsive in the face of a rapidly changing climate.
As momentum builds, the country stands at the forefront of Africa’s climate–health agenda, offering lessons for other nations striving to integrate climate resilience into public health systems.
