Kenya is strengthening its international partnerships to advance health research, innovation, and wellness, particularly focusing on improving service delivery for women and children. On October 21, 2025, Dr. Ouma Oluga, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, met with philanthropist Ms. Deloris Jordan, the Founder of the James R. Jordan Foundation International, to discuss the progress of the ongoing collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the Kenya Women and Children Wellness Centre (KWCWC).
The partnership between KEMRI and KWCWC aims to enhance various aspects of healthcare, including joint research, forensic laboratory services, and health data systems. It also focuses on promoting community-based public health initiatives that align with both national and regional health goals. These initiatives are integral to Kenya’s pursuit of advancing health outcomes for vulnerable groups, especially women and children.
Ms. Jordan’s foundation has played a significant role in supporting this partnership, particularly through programs designed to improve women’s and children’s wellness, health education, and empowerment. These programs complement the objectives of KEMRI and KWCWC by fostering global networks for resource mobilization and technical cooperation, which are crucial for scaling health interventions across communities. The foundation’s efforts also contribute to evidence-based approaches to public health, ensuring that the initiatives have a sustainable and measurable impact.
The discussions between the Kenyan officials and Ms. Jordan also explored potential opportunities for joint funding, training, and capacity building for health institutions. They examined areas for policy alignment and identified avenues where endorsements from the Ministry of Health could help secure international funding, ultimately strengthening Kenya’s national health systems.
In her remarks, Ms. Jordan praised Kenya’s leadership in the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and reaffirmed her foundation’s commitment to supporting health partnerships that promote equitable health outcomes. She also reflected on her long-standing association with the late Raila Odinga, recognizing his dedication to healthcare reform and expressing her gratitude to President William Ruto for the respect shown to the late statesman during his State Funeral.
This collaboration between international partners and local institutions marks a significant step forward in addressing the health needs of Kenya’s women and children, with a continued focus on creating lasting, positive change through global cooperation.
