Kenya has taken a major step forward in improving the early detection and management of tuberculosis (TB) and other chronic respiratory diseases, a move set to transform the country’s healthcare landscape.
The government recently unveiled ultra-portable digital chest X-ray units powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and launched the Integrated Lung Health Guidelines. This initiative is aimed at accelerating TB diagnosis, ensuring timely treatment, and reducing transmission in communities across the country.
A total of 80 AI-enabled X-ray units, supported by international health partners, will be distributed to primary healthcare facilities in 43 counties, with a particular focus on underserved and hard-to-reach areas. These portable units are expected to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and allow healthcare workers to identify TB cases more efficiently, even in remote locations.
The Integrated Lung Health Guidelines provide clear protocols for patient and staff safety, proper diagnostic procedures, and structured follow-up, ensuring that patients receive prompt and effective treatment. Developed in alignment with international best practices, the guidelines emphasize patient-centered care, prevention, and structured case management.
In addition to diagnostic improvements, the government has strengthened the supply chain for essential medical resources. Recent reforms have improved the order fill rate from 32 percent to 67 percent, while delivery turnaround times for county-level drug supplies have been reduced from 33 days to just 12. The ultimate goal under Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program is 100 percent order fulfillment, ensuring that every healthcare facility has timely access to necessary medicines and equipment.
This initiative represents a strong collaboration between the government, global health partners, and local stakeholders, reflecting a shared commitment to ending TB in Kenya. By leveraging technology, improving healthcare delivery systems, and setting clear operational standards, the country aims to enhance health outcomes, prevent disease spread, and strengthen the resilience of its healthcare system.
