Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged Kenyans to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) medical cover. The government aims to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all.
Speaking to over 1,500 women leaders from Laikipia County at Irunduni, Tharaka Nithi, Kindiki noted that more than 26 million Kenyans are already enrolled.
“With this trend, we will reach 30 million by December this year and 55 million by 2027. That will mean all Kenyans will be covered, which is a historic achievement,” he said.
Free Access for Vulnerable Kenyans
Kindiki revealed that at least 1.5 million Kenyans will access SHA services without any contribution after their economic status is assessed.
“We want everyone registered to qualify for coverage that eases the burden of hospital bills,” he added.
He urged women leaders to drive enrollment in Laikipia, where only 242,000 residents have registered against a target of 591,000.
Development Projects in Laikipia
The Deputy President highlighted ongoing government projects in the county:
- Construction of 12 modern markets in towns including Nyahururu, Nanyuki, and Sipili.
- Affordable housing projects in Naibor, Kinamba, Posta, and Nanyuki.
- Student hostels for Laikipia University and Nyahururu KMTC.
- Expansion of electricity connections with Sh720 million allocated.
Improving Security and Peace
Kindiki praised government efforts to restore peace in Laikipia after years of banditry and cattle rustling. He credited increased deployment of special police units and reservists for the stability now enjoyed by residents.
Empowering Women and Local Economies
The Deputy President also highlighted the role of women in driving local economies. He emphasized government support for agriculture, rural enterprises, and small businesses under the BETA agenda.
“As we expand the economy and create jobs, we empower families and communities, benefiting both men and women,” he said.
Through SHA enrollment, development projects, and security initiatives, the government aims to improve healthcare access, economic opportunities, and peace for millions of Kenyans.
