The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has ordered the immediate evacuation of all patients from Chiromo Group of Hospitals, Braeside branch. This urgent directive follows the shocking death of Toto Touch CEO Susan Kamengere Njoki, who passed away on July 15, just a day after being admitted to the facility.
According to a formal notice issued on July 25, the council instructed the hospital to cease all clinical operations and evacuate all patients within 24 hours. The directive emphasized the need for the safe relocation of patients currently under the facility’s care.
The council cited new developments surrounding Njoki’s death as the basis for the swift action. The facility was further instructed to provide a comprehensive response, including detailed documentation such as post-mortem findings, relevant patient records, and any additional materials requested by the council.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Njoki died as a result of manual strangulation. The examination, conducted by a panel of six pathologists representing different stakeholders, confirmed the findings unanimously. The pathologists were drawn from the hospital, the police, the family, and government entities. While the team also noted unrelated medical signs that pointed to a pre-existing condition Njoki may have been managing during her admission, they concluded that these were not linked to her cause of death.
It was established that Njoki died at the hospital approximately four hours after her last meal, as food was still found in her stomach during the autopsy. This information was corroborated by the police medical team.
In addition to halting operations and relocating patients, KMPDC has demanded a detailed report from the facility outlining corrective actions and measures being put in place to prevent such incidents in the future. The council reiterated its commitment to safeguarding patient safety and enforcing the highest standards of medical care in the country.
This development marks a serious regulatory response to concerns about hospital accountability and patient well-being, placing Chiromo Braeside under intense scrutiny as investigations continue.
