A major community sensitization forum was held in Kurutiange, Masaba Ward, Kuria West Sub-County, Migori County, to address two critical issues affecting public health: tobacco farming and drug and substance abuse. The initiative focused on promoting the Tobacco-Free Farm program and creating awareness of the dangers associated with drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
The session highlighted the severe health and economic consequences of tobacco cultivation and use. While tobacco farming has traditionally been viewed as a source of income for many households, experts cautioned that the crop poses long-term risks to both the environment and farmers’ health. Continuous exposure to nicotine and harmful chemicals during cultivation can lead to serious health problems, while the economic returns from tobacco remain low compared to alternative crops. Participants were encouraged to adopt sustainable farming practices and shift to alternative crops that offer better income and improve community well-being.
Beyond the agricultural aspect, the forum shed light on the growing menace of drug and substance abuse, especially among young people in the region. Community leaders and health professionals warned that the rising trend in drug use threatens to derail social and economic progress. Drug abuse not only impacts the health of individuals but also contributes to crime, school dropouts, and family breakdowns. The need for proactive measures, including awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programs, and strong family support systems, was strongly emphasized.
A key message from the forum was the power of community-driven solutions in tackling these challenges.
