The Ministry of Health has intensified its efforts to support families affected by the devastating landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County. Working hand in hand with the county government, the Ministry is mobilizing essential medical supplies, hygiene kits, and water treatment chemicals to ensure that affected communities receive urgent assistance.
Community Health Promoters (CHPs) have been deployed to reach families in areas that remain inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure. Their mission is to assess the immediate needs of those impacted and provide on-the-ground assistance, including first aid, health education, and coordination of emergency response efforts. The Ministry has emphasized the importance of quick intervention to prevent further loss and suffering among displaced families.
Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, has called for national solidarity and compassion as communities come to terms with the tragedy. Speaking during a church service in Kiambu, she urged Kenyans to continue praying for the victims and to offer any support they can to help rebuild lives. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that no family is left behind during this crisis.
The PS noted that the Ministry is coordinating with Elgeyo Marakwet County health officials to guarantee the timely delivery of critical supplies, including clean water and medicines. Efforts are also underway to provide psychosocial support to victims, especially children and families who have suffered emotional trauma. Health teams are on high alert to prevent outbreaks of waterborne and infectious diseases that often follow such natural disasters.
In her address, Muthoni underscored the government’s adoption of a whole-of-government approach in responding to the landslide. Various agencies have been brought together to manage rescue operations, support relocation efforts, and restore damaged infrastructure. She reiterated that the government remains committed to restoring normalcy and ensuring that the affected families receive both immediate relief and long-term support.
As recovery operations continue, the Ministry of Health has encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to public health guidelines in disaster-prone areas.
