The Murang’a County Government has recalled health workers on leave and opened new wards at the Murang’a Level 5 Hospital following a sharp increase in patient numbers.
According to the county’s Department of Health, the hospital is currently serving between 1,500 and 2,000 outpatients daily, while all 500 inpatient beds are fully occupied. The surge has been attributed to an influx of patients from neighbouring counties seeking specialised services after recent infrastructure upgrades at the facility.
To manage the high patient load, the county has implemented several emergency measures, including reorganising emergency staff, deploying marshals to guide patients, and strengthening 24-hour laboratory and radiology operations. The county has also established linkages with Level 4 hospitals within Murang’a to ease pressure on the referral hospital.
“The county remains committed to providing quality services to every client,” said a statement from the Department of Health. It added that while recruitment of additional medical personnel is planned, budget constraints may limit the process. The county has urged the Assembly to fast-track the Locum Policy to facilitate temporary staff hiring during emergencies.
Residents have been encouraged to seek care at nearby facilities such as Muriranjas, Mugoiri, New Mukuyu, and Kiangage dispensaries in Kiharu Constituency, which have been equipped with additional doctors and expanded services.
In July 2025, the county commissioned a new Mother and Child Unit, expanding the hospital’s capacity from 285 to over 400 beds. The new wing features a modern casualty department, specialist outpatient clinics, two operating theatres, and a 128-slice GE CT scan machine to enhance diagnostics.
The hospital also houses a 35-bed ICU facility that continues to provide free emergency services. Ongoing projects include a new theatre block and ward expansions at Level 4 hospitals to further decentralize healthcare access across Murang’a County.
