The Nairobi Hospital has introduced a home-based blood collection service targeted at critically ill and vulnerable patients. This groundbreaking initiative is expected to significantly ease the burden for patients with chronic illnesses, physical disabilities, pregnant women, and children groups that often find it challenging to visit hospital laboratories for essential tests.
Launched at the hospital’s Nairobi laboratory, the Home Blood Collection Service is part of a broader effort to strengthen patient-centred care and improve service delivery. The service allows patients to have blood and other fluid samples collected from the comfort of their homes, workplaces, or other convenient locations.
Speaking during the launch, Nairobi Hospital CEO Felix Osano described the initiative as a major milestone in modern healthcare delivery. “In today’s fast-paced world, this service enables patients to access care without disrupting their daily routines. Most importantly, it ensures that vulnerable members of our society are not inconvenienced,” he said.
The new service will be carried out by trained and licensed phlebotomists who will collect samples directly from patients. Once a request is received through a dedicated contact number or email, a healthcare professional is dispatched promptly. In addition, a support team will assist patients with navigating insurance approvals, further simplifying the process.
Dr Rahul Zode, the hospital’s Chief Pathologist, underscored the affordability of the service. “We are committed to making quality healthcare accessible to all. The home blood collection service is available to any patient who needs it, and comes at a minimal cost of KES 200 per visit, subject to insurance provider approval,” he stated.
This initiative is expected to benefit thousands of Kenyans by removing barriers to timely diagnostics and reinforcing The Nairobi Hospital’s reputation as a leader in patient-focused healthcare. With this service, the hospital is not only embracing innovation but also prioritising the dignity, comfort, and convenience of its patients.
