Over 400 residents of Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, received free medical services at a health outreach event held to mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. The two-day medical camp, which took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Olympic Kibera, was a collaborative effort between the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kenya Red Cross Society.
The health camp provided a wide range of services, including general medical consultations, diabetic screening, and eye checkups, aimed at improving the well-being of Kibera’s underserved community. For many residents, the event was a rare opportunity to access medical care that they may otherwise not afford.
Iran’s Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Ali Gholampour, and Kenya Red Cross Secretary General, Dr. Ahmed Idris, attended the camp and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting vulnerable populations with much-needed medical care. Dr. Gholampour, speaking during the event, emphasized the importance of such collaborations in improving healthcare access in marginalized areas. Both he and Dr. Idris pledged to continue their partnership in bringing essential medical services to more communities in Kenya.
The medical camp also served as a platform to raise awareness about chronic conditions such as diabetes, which often go undiagnosed in low-income neighborhoods. With free screenings available, many residents took the opportunity to learn about their health status and seek guidance on managing health conditions.
Residents of Kibera were encouraged to take full advantage of these services and prioritize regular health check-ups to catch potential health issues early. The event highlighted the spirit of humanitarian aid and the vital role of partnerships in making healthcare accessible to all.
The Red Crescent Society of Iran and the Kenya Red Cross Society are determined to continue their work to improve health outcomes for Kenya’s most vulnerable populations, with the promise of more such outreach initiatives in the future.
