On September 24, 2025, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, provided an update on Kenya’s health initiatives during an interview on Radio Citizen’s Jambo Kenya show. She highlighted the significant progress made in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), improving community health services, and strengthening the country’s response to disease outbreaks.
A central focus of her discussion was the collaborative effort between various agencies to combat drug and substance abuse. Ms. Muthoni stressed the importance of a multi-agency approach that involves the Ministry of Health, NACADA, law enforcement, county governments, and faith-based organizations. Prevention and rehabilitation programs, along with community sensitization campaigns, are critical to protecting young people and safeguarding the future.
Ms. Muthoni also elaborated on the role of the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA) in facilitating the implementation of Universal Health Coverage. The SHA is tasked with ensuring that affordable health services are accessible to all Kenyans without the risk of financial hardship. She assured the public that mechanisms have been put in place to guarantee accountability, transparency, and equity in the delivery of healthcare services.
Additionally, the Principal Secretary emphasized the importance of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in the country’s healthcare infrastructure. Over 100,000 CHPs have been trained and deployed nationwide, playing a vital role in primary healthcare. These health workers are essential for providing health education, preventive services, and referrals, ensuring that every household has access to health resources and services. This initiative is seen as a key driver in achieving UHC and improving the overall health system.
Regarding disease outbreaks, Ms. Muthoni assured the public that the Ministry of Health, in partnership with county governments and other stakeholders, has significantly strengthened its disease surveillance and rapid response systems. The government has enhanced resource mobilization to quickly contain outbreaks and mitigate their impact. She encouraged the public to remain vigilant, report any health concerns promptly, and follow preventive health measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Through these initiatives, Kenya is making substantial strides in improving its healthcare system, ensuring better access to services, and enhancing public health resilience across the nation.
