The Government has stepped up efforts to combat drug and substance abuse in Kirinyaga County through a coordinated, multi-agency strategy that brings together the Ministry of Health, NACADA, law enforcement, county governments, and faith-based organizations.
During a community engagement forum in Kirinyaga, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni called on clergy and local leaders to play an active role in this campaign. She emphasized that addressing drug abuse requires collective responsibility, urging religious leaders to guide young people, expose hidden drug dens, and help mobilize communities toward healthier lifestyles.
Muthoni underscored the importance of clergy in shaping values, saying their influence can significantly help steer youth away from destructive behaviors. She encouraged them to use their platforms not only for spiritual growth but also for social change, especially in safeguarding families against the rising threat of drug and substance abuse.
Alongside the fight against drugs, Muthoni highlighted the role of health reforms in improving access to quality services. She reiterated the importance of Social Health Authority (SHA) registration, noting that the government, through its new Sponsorship Program, will cater to contributions for over 2.2 million vulnerable Kenyans. This initiative is expected to ensure inclusivity and shield vulnerable families from catastrophic health expenses.
The Principal Secretary further highlighted the government’s ongoing development agenda in Kirinyaga County. She pointed out that major investments are being undertaken, including the expansion of road networks, the Sagana Industrial Park, the Sagana Housing Project, and market upgrades. These projects, she noted, are designed to spur economic growth, create employment opportunities, and uplift the living standards of residents.
Muthoni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a people-centered approach where social, health, and infrastructural development go hand in hand. She called for unity among stakeholders, stressing that effective collaboration between government institutions, religious groups, and community organizations is the surest way to tackle societal challenges such as drug abuse.
Her message resonated strongly with attendees, who pledged to work closely with government agencies to protect the youth and build healthier, more resilient communities. The event served as a reminder that lasting change begins at the community level, with leadership and partnership as key drivers of progress
