Principal Secretaries for Medical Services and Defence recently visited Siaya County in preparation for the groundbreaking of two major infrastructure projects: the new Siaya County Referral Hospital and the Phase Two upgrade of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.
The proposed referral hospital is a joint effort between the National Government and the County Government of Siaya. The project is set to be developed in multiple phases at an estimated total cost of KES 1.7 billion. The first phase, budgeted at KES 500 million, will be spearheaded by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), who are tasked with overseeing construction.
This upcoming four-storey medical facility is designed to significantly expand healthcare access and services in the region. It will feature a modern accident and emergency unit, an outpatient complex, a doctors’ plaza, and a 500-bed inpatient capacity. Specialized departments such as oncology, maternal and child health, and general medical wards will also be part of the hospital’s core services, making it a comprehensive health centre for residents of Siaya and neighbouring regions.
In addition to the hospital, the delegation assessed the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, which is scheduled for its second phase of upgrades. This phase will focus on enhancing the stadium’s infrastructure, including the construction of five new terraces aimed at increasing its seating capacity. These improvements are intended to prepare the facility for hosting both regional and international sporting events in the future.
Both the hospital and stadium redevelopment projects fall under a wider initiative aimed at improving healthcare delivery and sporting infrastructure through strategic cooperation between the National and County Governments. The projects are also closely aligned with the development goals of the local administration, which seeks to raise the standard of living and socio-economic potential in the county.
This visit by top government officials signifies the importance placed on health and sports as key pillars for community development, and the role of intergovernmental collaboration in delivering impactful public infrastructure.
