Nairobi, June 13, 2025 – Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga chaired a high-level consultative meeting aimed at assessing progress on the implementation of the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology. The session brought together stakeholders from the African Development Bank, the National Treasury, and the Ministry of Health, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering world-class specialist healthcare.
The project, which seeks to establish a state-of-the-art referral and training facility in urology and nephrology, is part of a broader regional initiative to enhance specialized health services across East Africa. During the meeting, the stakeholders reviewed progress reports, discussed budget allocations, and examined timelines to ensure timely completion of the centre. The discussions emphasized alignment with national health strategies and sustainable development goals.
Representatives at the meeting included Ms. Nadege Balima from the African Development Bank, Mr. Samuel Nyoike of the National Treasury, and Dr. Ajuck Hossin representing the Ministry of Health. The meeting highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination and international collaboration to facilitate effective implementation. Dr. Oluga noted that the Centre will play a critical role in addressing the growing burden of kidney and urinary tract diseases, which have placed increasing pressure on the country’s healthcare system.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the ongoing infrastructure development and reaffirmed their institutions’ support in meeting key milestones. The meeting concluded with resolutions to fast-track pending procurement processes and streamline operational plans to prepare for the launch phase.
Once complete, the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology will offer advanced diagnostic, treatment, and training services, serving not only Kenya but the wider East African region. The facility is expected to enhance capacity building, reduce the need for medical referrals abroad, and contribute significantly to health sector innovation and service delivery improvement.
