The government has taken a significant step toward strengthening Kenya’s health system through the launch of a comprehensive health facility digitization program and a mass registration campaign under the Social Health Authority (SHA) in Migori County.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery across the country. Digitization of health facilities is expected to play a transformative role by streamlining operations, supporting real-time patient data collection, and improving claims processing under the SHA. This shift is part of broader efforts to ensure that healthcare is more accessible, accountable, and performance-driven.
As part of the digital transformation strategy, 750 digital devices were handed over to Migori County to enhance health service delivery. These include 112 computers and 638 tablets which will be used at the facility level to manage data, improve service coordination, and facilitate the registration of beneficiaries into the national health insurance system. The introduction of digital infrastructure will also support the creation of accurate patient records and strengthen decision-making at both local and national levels.
Simultaneously, a mass registration campaign under the newly formed Social Health Authority was launched to encourage community members to enroll in the scheme. The SHA has been established as a central component of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. It is designed to ensure that every citizen, particularly those working in the informal sector or in vulnerable groups, has access to quality and affordable healthcare.
The launch in Migori served as a platform to raise awareness about the benefits of SHA, including improved access to essential health services without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses. Community health volunteers and local health administrators will play a key role in educating the public and ensuring maximum enrollment into the program.
This collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health and the Migori County Government reflects a shared commitment to advancing healthcare equity and strengthening public health infrastructure. County officials were commended for their active participation and leadership in embracing the health reforms.
The digitization and SHA registration drive is part of a broader national rollout, which will extend to other counties in the coming months. As Kenya continues its journey toward achieving Universal Health Coverage, such initiatives are expected to build a more resilient, transparent, and people-centered health system. By integrating digital tools and expanding insurance coverage, the government aims to bridge health service gaps and promote long-term sustainability in healthcare financing and delivery.
