The Social Health Authority (SHA) has issued a strong warning to Kenyans to stay alert following reports of an ongoing impersonation scam targeting members of the public. According to the Authority, a growing number of individuals have lost their money to fraudsters posing as SHA officials, promising quick registration or faster access to services in exchange for payment.
In a statement shared on Thursday, SHA confirmed that it had received numerous complaints from victims who were deceived by these criminals. The fraudsters reportedly demanded money, personal details, and even M-Pesa PINs while pretending to offer official assistance. The Authority stressed that SHA staff do not charge any fees for registration or service facilitation.
SHA urged Kenyans who have been approached by such individuals to immediately report the cases to the police or contact the Authority directly through the toll-free number 147 or via email at fraud@sha.go.ke. The agency emphasized that all its services are free, transparent, and strictly conducted through official channels.
SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting the public from scammers. She reassured Kenyans that registration for the national health coverage program is completely free and can only be completed through verified platforms such as the USSD code *147#, the websites www.afyayangu.go.ke and www.sha.go.ke, or at Huduma Centres, SHA County Offices, and through authorized Community Health Promoters wearing branded vests.
Payments for SHA contributions, Mwangangi added, should only be made via the official M-Pesa Business Number 200222 or designated banks communicated by the Authority. She also cautioned Kenyans against handing over their phones to strangers offering help with registration, as this could expose them to identity theft and financial fraud.
SHA reminded the public that official outreach activities are always announced through verified government channels, the media, and local authorities. The Authority encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, verify information before taking action, and report any suspicious individuals or messages.
Protecting personal information and money, SHA concluded, begins with individual vigilance and awareness. For further assistance or clarification, Kenyans are advised to contact the Authority via the toll-free line 147 or visit www.sha.go.ke.
