A major road accident along the Kisumu–Kakamega road has left 25 people dead and dozens injured, prompting an urgent blood drive to save the lives of survivors. The crash involved a school bus carrying members of the Sigoti Clan from Nyakach and occurred on Friday evening, leaving the country in shock and mourning.
Thirty-two survivors are currently receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), most of them in the Orthopaedic Trauma Ward. Many are in critical condition, requiring urgent medical intervention. Medical teams worked tirelessly to stabilize the injured, with all survivors admitted to hospital wards within three hours of arrival.
To support the high demand for blood, an emergency blood donation drive will be held at Leresian Park within JOOTRH on Saturday, August 9, 2025, starting at 9:00 AM. The hospital’s Blood Transfusion Unit will coordinate the exercise, welcoming members of the public to donate and help replenish blood stocks.
Authorities have also set up a counseling tent for affected families and a communication desk to provide regular updates on patients’ conditions. Efforts are underway to secure and return personal belongings recovered from the accident scene, ensuring they reach the rightful families.
Leaders present at JOOTRH commended the hospital’s swift and organized response, noting that timely medical care and the availability of essential equipment, including a portable X-ray machine, played a crucial role in saving lives.
Beyond the immediate medical response, attention is turning to social support for survivors and bereaved families. Emotional counseling, logistical assistance, and coordinated government support are being mobilized to help communities cope with the tragedy.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the need for improved road safety and caution among motorists. Authorities are urging all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life on Kenyan roads.
As Kisumu mourns and rallies around the victims, the urgent call for blood donations offers an opportunity for Kenyans to unite in compassion. The gesture of donating blood could mean the difference between life and death for many of those still fighting for survival.
