As Kenya moves closer to the 2027 general elections, Raila Odinga’s political future is once again at the center of national debate. A new poll by Trends and Insights for Africa (Tifa), released on September 24, 2025, reveals that Kenyans remain deeply divided on the role the veteran ODM leader should play in the coming political contest.
According to the survey, 32% of respondents believe Raila should support President William Ruto’s re-election bid. This indicates that a significant portion of the electorate views alliance politics as a possible path forward, rather than another direct face-off. Such a move would mark a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape, given Raila’s long history of challenging incumbent regimes.
On the other hand, 23% of Kenyans want Raila to rejoin the opposition and run for the presidency himself. This group reflects the enduring trust in his leadership and the belief that he still has what it takes to rally the country behind his vision. For many of his supporters, Raila remains the face of reform and resilience.
Meanwhile, 17% of those surveyed prefer Raila to lead the opposition but support another candidate. This signals a growing appetite for generational change within the opposition ranks, where many Kenyans are eager to see fresh leadership while still valuing Raila’s experience and influence.
Interestingly, 14% of respondents think Raila should retire from active politics altogether. After decades in the political arena, including five unsuccessful presidential bids, there is a sense among some Kenyans that it may be time for him to step aside and let a new wave of leaders take charge.
The Tifa poll underscores how Raila Odinga continues to hold a unique and polarizing position in Kenyan politics. As 2027 approaches, his decision—whether to retire, support an alliance, or make another run—will shape not only his legacy but also the direction of the nation’s political future.
