Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), Ababu Namwamba, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to friends, family, and colleagues who supported him following the passing of his mother, Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba.
Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, and was laid to rest on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at her family home. She was remembered as the matriarch of the Namwamba family, a pillar of strength to her children, and a guiding light within the wider community.
In a statement shared on X, Namwamba acknowledged the outpouring of support during this period of mourning. “Friends, you’ve been a warm embrace in this cold season of sorrow,” he said, expressing appreciation for the love and solidarity shown by well-wishers.
Namwamba specifically thanked religious institutions and leaders who played a vital role in the mourning ceremonies, including VOSH Church International led by Archbishop Winnie Owiti, Philothea Catholic Mission led by Fr. George and Sr. Florence, and the Youth for Christ Choir, Karen, led by Victor Owit. He also extended gratitude to Milka Omondi from Homa Bay for performing Mama Agatha’s favorite song, “Yesu Tiyo Taling’alinga,” which he said “made Mama dance with the angels.”
The former Sports Cabinet Secretary also acknowledged the presence and support of political and diplomatic figures, including former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Busia Governor Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, Kenya’s Ambassador to UN-HABITAT Susan Nakhumicha, and colleagues from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Sports.
Namwamba highlighted the contributions of the Team Ababu Network, his local Busia community, and the extended Namwamba family across Kenya and beyond, noting that their support had been invaluable.
He further appreciated the assistance of national government officers, security teams, and the Kenyatta University fraternity, including Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), and Ajuma Photography, for their critical services during the burial.
“The Peter and Agatha Namwamba family appreciates all true friends who have stood by our side as we mourn our beloved mother,” Namwamba concluded, thanking everyone who joined in celebrating his mother’s life and legacy.
