Former Agriculture Cabinet Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa has paid a glowing tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a political force who transcended his father’s legacy. Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Kirwa said Raila’s influence and political reach went far beyond the confines of Luo Nyanza, which was his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s stronghold.
“Raila Odinga went beyond the popularity of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. He captured four or five more constituencies, unlike his father, who mainly commanded Luo Nyanza,” Kirwa said, emphasizing Raila’s unmatched ability to unite people across different regions and ideologies.
Kirwa also commended the government for according Raila a state funeral, describing it as a befitting send-off for a man who constantly challenged the status quo. “In death, just as in life, Raila defied every rule in the book,” he remarked, noting that Raila’s political journey symbolized resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to democracy.
During the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County on Monday, October 20, President William Ruto also reflected on Raila’s lasting impact. The President praised Raila as a patriot who placed Kenya’s peace and stability above personal ambition.
“Those who criticised Baba for working with us to stabilise the nation forget that many stable countries in our region later descended into turmoil,” Ruto stated. He added that Raila understood the delicate balance between political ambition and national stability, always prioritizing the country’s unity.
Raila’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the political divide, with many describing him as a statesman who shaped Kenya’s democratic journey and left behind a legacy of hope, dialogue, and nationhood.
