Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i was met with thunderous applause and a sea of supporters during his inaugural political rally in Kisii on Friday, signaling his formal return to the political scene and an intent to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati, hosting Matiang’i during the highly anticipated rally, urged him to expand his campaign trail beyond Gusii land and take his message across the country. Arati encouraged the former CS to visit Nyanza, Rift Valley, Coast, Northeastern, and Nairobi regions, emphasizing the need for inclusive national dialogue and leadership.
“Hon Matiang’i, these people have not been paid even a cent to be here,” Arati remarked, pointing to the massive crowd. “We want to tell you to move beyond Gusii and engage leaders across the country to ensure we too sit at the national leadership table.”
The overwhelming turnout forced Matiang’i to shift his rally venue from Kisii Capital Roundabout to the larger Gusii Stadium. Streets around Capital-Hospital Road were brought to a standstill as thousands thronged the town, celebrating his homecoming.
Matiang’i’s declaration to enter the presidential race has injected new energy into Kenya’s political landscape. His candidacy, coupled with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s quest to reclaim Mt. Kenya’s political influence from Ruto, presents a fresh challenge to the Ruto-Raila alliance formed earlier this year.
Addressing the crowd, Matiang’i urged Kenyans not to give up on their country despite the economic and social hardships. “Let us not lose hope. Kenya is a resilient nation. When the time comes, with God’s help, we shall fix our problems,” he said.
He also urged residents to register as voters, hinting at a long-term, organized campaign.
Leaders across the political divide lauded the event. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba simply noted, “Nice,” while DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa added, “Hongera Fred Matiang’i! Hongera Gusii land for speaking loudly and clearly.”
Matiang’i’s entry signals a new political wave that may reshape the 2027 presidential race. Will he manage to turn the enthusiasm in Kisii into national momentum? Only time will tell.
