Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that the homes and businesses of at least six Members of Parliament were targeted during violent protests held across the country on Wednesday. Speaking during a press briefing at Harambee House, Murkomen decried the attacks as part of a broader wave of politically instigated violence and destruction.
Among the lawmakers whose properties were attacked are National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kimani Kuria (Molo), Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni), Bernard Muriuki (Mbeere South), and Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East).
Murkomen alleged that the violence was not spontaneous but part of a deliberate campaign aimed at intimidating government supporters. “This was not just violence. It was an orchestrated campaign of terror an assault on our people, our constitution, our institutions, our values, and the very soul of this Republic,” he stated.
He further disclosed that beyond the homes of politicians, several businesses including kiosks, supermarkets, electronic shops, hotels, and restaurants were also looted and destroyed in various towns, leaving behind a trail of economic and emotional devastation.
“The orchestrators of the violence went back to the safety of their homes, leaving Kenyans at the mercy of goons and criminals,” Murkomen said. He expressed sympathy for families affected by the unrest, including members of the public and security personnel who suffered injuries or loss of property.
However, Murkomen singled out Mombasa as an example of how peaceful demonstrations can be conducted within the bounds of the law. He praised the protesters in the coastal city for following a defined route and timeline under police supervision, in line with Article 37 of the Constitution which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.
As investigations continue, the government has vowed to identify and hold accountable those behind the violence. The CS emphasized that the attacks were a stain on the country’s conscience and called for calm and respect for constitutional processes.
