Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has urged police officers across the country to maintain discipline and firmness in their work rather than trying to be overly friendly with members of the public.
Speaking during a public address on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Atwoli emphasized that strict policing is the only effective way to maintain law and order and to curb the increasing crime rate in Kenya.
“Hawa ndio wanaangalia nchi. Polisi lazima awe polisi. Polisi akiwa rafiki ya mwananchi, mambo mabaya hayatakomeshwa,” Atwoli said.
He argued that police officers are entrusted with the critical duty of protecting the nation and should be allowed to carry out their work without interference or fear of backlash. According to Atwoli, excessive leniency and friendliness can embolden criminals, undermining the authority of law enforcement agencies.
The veteran trade unionist also called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ease its pressure on police officers and instead support them as they execute their duties.
“Hata mimi naomba IPOA. IPOA lazima ipoe kwa polisi,” he said, noting that strict supervision without flexibility could frustrate officers, especially those working in high-risk areas.
Atwoli further defended the need for firm policing, saying that maintaining order in society requires discipline and authority.
“Mwafrika, mtu wa ngozi nyeusi, usipomnyorosha utampata kwa bedroom yako,” he remarked, implying that laxity in enforcing laws leads to chaos.
He added that police officers play a vital role in protecting both leaders and citizens, citing his personal reliance on security personnel for safety. Atwoli also lightened the mood by introducing his wife during the event, acknowledging her understanding and support for his demanding schedule.
Atwoli’s remarks reaffirm his long-held belief that Kenya’s stability and peace depend on a disciplined and empowered police force.
