An autopsy conducted on Albert Omondi Ojwang’, the 31-year-old teacher and blogger who died in police custody, has revealed that he suffered fatal head injuries and neck compression. Dr. Midia, the pathologist who led the examination, stated that the injuries were inconsistent with self-harm and were likely caused by external forces.
“We found serious injuries on the head, neck compression, and soft tissue injuries spread across the body,” Dr. Midia said during a press briefing. He noted that the injuries were widespread, affecting the face, back, and sides of the head, as well as the upper limbs and trunk, suggesting a violent struggle. Tissue samples have been taken for further forensic analysis to aid investigations.
The autopsy was conducted by a team of five forensic pathologists, with representatives from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Kenya National Human Rights Commission, and the Independent Medical Legal Organization present. Ojwang’s family also had a representative during the procedure.
In response, the National Police Service has interdicted six officers attached to Central Police Station, including Officer Commanding Station Samson Talaam, duty officer Samuel Ng’ang’a, and four others. Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri stated that the move was to allow a thorough and impartial investigation by IPOA.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga condemning the police over Ojwang’s death. Odinga warned that such extrajudicial killings undermine public trust in law enforcement and the state, pushing the country toward chaos.
“When citizens can no longer tell the difference between police injustice and mob injustice, we are staring at the reality of failure as a nation,” Odinga said, expressing concern over rising cases of police brutality.
Ojwang’s death has reignited debates on police accountability in Kenya, with calls for urgent reforms to end impunity and restore faith in the justice system. As investigations continue, human rights groups demand swift action to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
